All jams published by Tionna Music. Produced by [Morris Day] and [Jamie Starr]. Additional background on Cool done by various girlfriends. Recorded at Time Studio. Mixed at Hollywood Sound. Engineered and mixed by [Jamie Starr]. Originally mastered by Bernie Grundman. CDD pre-mastering by WCI Record Group. Personal Management: Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli. Photography: Al Beaulieu. THE TIME is [Terry Lewis] (bass, co-lead and background vocals, [Jimmy Jam] (keyboards and vocals), [Morris Day] (lead and background vocals), [Monte Moir] (keyboards and vocals), [Jellybean Johnson] (drums and percussion), [Jesse Johnson] (guitar and vocals).

Liner Notes: THE TIME, originally named Flyte Tyme after a song by jazzman Donald Byrd, was formed in Minneapolis in the mid-70s as a rock & roll trio. The group eventually evolved into a stylish show band complete with horns. The group's original singer, Cynthia Johnson, went to join Lipps, Inc. and scored with the hit "Funkytown" in 1980. In 1981, under the creative auspices of [Prince], the group recruited vocalist [Morris Day] to front the new TIME. [Morris Day], formerly a drummer of [Prince]'s high school band, added flash and finesse to the group's visual image along with a knack for writing hit songs. The rest of the group consisted of founding members [Terry Lewis] (bass) and [Jellybean Johnson] (drums), [Jesse Johnson] (guitar), keyboardists [Monte Moir] and [Jimmy 'Jam' Harris] and the group's valet, [Jerome Benton]. THE TIME won over concert audiences as an opening act for [Prince] and soon earned a loyal following of their own. Fans mobbed the stage during the group's performances, dazzled by [Morris Day]'s charismatic cool, which included stopping mid-song to comb his hair in a mirror held by [Jerome]. THE TIME's self titled debut album for Warner Bros. Records was released in the summer of 1981. Produced by the group with [Prince] (under the moniker 'Jamie Starr'), the album contained six TIME originals, including three hit singles Get it up, Cool and Girl.

Liner Notes: In 1982 the center of the musical universe became Minneapolis, Minnesota, hometown for a new generation of talent taking charge of the charts. Front and center was THE TIME, fronted by singer, writer and champion of cool [Morris Day]. He assembled THE TIME from elements of the thriving Twin City music scene in 1980, bringing together keyboard players [Jimmy Jam] and [Monte Moir], bassist [Terry Lewis], drummer [Jellybean Johnson] and guitarist [Jesse Johnson]. The group's debut album in 1981, featured three Top Ten Hits and was a certified gold seller. THE TIME won over concert audience as an opening act for friend and creative consultant [Prince] and soon earned their own and loyal following. Fans mobbed the stage during the group's performances, dazzled by [Morris Day]'s charismatic cool, which included stopping mid-song to comb his hair in a mirror held by his personal valet. THE TIME's second album [What Time Is It?], was released in August of 1982. Produced by [Morris Day], the album's six TIME originals immediately established the sextet as major contenders on both the dance and urban contemporary scene. The album's out-of-the-box hit was 777-9311, a song that topped the charts and had telephones with that particular number jangling off their hooks. It was followed by The walk, a nine minute-plus work-out that swept dance clubs. Gigolos get lonely too was the third hit on [What Time Is It?], the album that took THE TIME over the top.

Here, we gladly present our re-assembled version of this withdrawn album. Minor flaws and glitches on the already circulating version have been eleminated. My summertime thang Part 1 and Part 2 (or extended portion) have been melted into one track just for the sheer pleasure of envisioning what a "full item" might have sounded like. We appologies to 'purists', this is our "new approach". Now we just hope you'll enjoy it!!

P A R T I A L   C R E D I T S

Published by Emancipation Music ASCAP. Produced & arranged by [The Artist]. Additional production by Kirk Johnson & Ricky Peterson. All tracks written by [Prince]. Movie star performed by [Prince] with an unknown female artist (co-lead vocals). Cloreen bacon skin performed by [Prince] (vocals & bass) with [Morris Day] (drums).

Special Liner Notes from the Booklet:
Movie star - D'Angelo's favorite bootleg. His love 4 this track inspired its inclusion. Imagine [Morris Day] doin' this! That's who it was written 4 - THE TIME.
Cloreen Bacon Skin - in need of the most explanation. [Morris] and [Prince] were in the studio working on THE TIME's second album [What Time Is It?]. 2 keep [Morris] in the pocket, [Prince] would go in2 an alter ego voice that was sick, spirited, and highly percussive. This kept it funky. He was just looking 4 a funky beat 2 layer instruments on. The bass line was not important, so he just played the beat on the bass so 2 speak. A new style of playing derived from this recording style, and several songs were cut in the same vibe - the coolest being "Irresistible bitch". Only [Morris] and [Prince] were present on this recording. Everything U hear is impromptu. No lyrics or music, even the title was made up a split second be4 U hear it.

Published by Image Entertainment (USA) / Eagle Vision, a division of Eagle Rock Entertainment Plc. (Europe). Produced by Paisley Park Enterprises Inc. Written by [Prince] as Jamie Starr with [Morris Day] and [Jesse Johnson]. Performed live December 17th, 1999 at Paisley Park in Chanhassen (MN) by [Morris Day] (lead vocals), [Torrell 'Tori' Ruffin] (guitar), [Ricky 'Freeze' Smith] (bass), [Jellybean Johnson] (drums), [Jerome Benton] (percussion), [Monte Moir] and [Robert Grisset] (both keyboards). Original versions taken from the 1984 album [Ice Cream Castle].

Special Liner Notes from the Booklet:
1983... 1999... Prince. 2 significant dates, 1 artist. Five albums in2 his remarkable career, Prince penned an instant party classic that would become a millennium anthem. The song served as the soundtrack 2 December 31st, 1999 and there was no better place 2 xperience it than Chanhassen Minnesota, home 2 Paisley Park Studios and the jam of the century. "Rave un2 the year 2000", a title that only begins 2 describe the events about 2 unfold, when the Park opens its doors U never know who will come 2 play. Here's the lineup: [...] Oh, and need we mention the Minneapolis sound? It's like 1984 all over again as Morris Day & THE TIME throw down the musical gauntlet 2 The Artist and his band. Neither band has lost the spark that turned the Minneapolis music scene in2 a blazing hotbed of creativity and sound.
